The worst 5 Toyota cars and models since year 2000

The Toyota brand is one of the leading and most recognized car brands in Nigeria and all over the world. Various Toyota cars and models doted the Nigerian roads and are specifically sought after for their reputed second-hand value.

Founded in by Kiichiro Toyoda in 1937 as a spinoff from his father’s company, Toyota Motor Corporation has grown to become the biggest car maker in the known universe (i.e. according to BBC Top Gear) and the 13th-largest company in the world by revenue.

Some Toyota cars and models

Some of Toyota’s most popular vehicles include the Land Cruiser, Avalon, Avensis, 4Runner, Camry, Corolla, RAV4, and Seina. The Corolla particularly is one of the most popular and best selling cars in the world in with over 40 million sold.

In this article however, we identify and examine the worst 5 Toyota cars and models based on the number of complaints submitted on them to Carcomplaints.com. The cars and models are examined in no particular order.

1. 2007 Toyota Camry

2007-toyota-camryThis model has a total number of 649 critical complaints. The most reported problems are categorized as engine problem (353). The worst engine problems are excessive fuel consumption and burning oil. An increasing number of Toyotas have been reported to be experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge.

Other major and broad problems include interior accessories problems (91), brake problems (73), transmission problems (41), body and paint problems (16) and electrical problems (14).

This model year is also the most problematic Toyota Camry model since the 80s.

2. 2007 Toyota RAV4

2007-toyota-rav4This model has a total number of 248 critical complaints. The most reported problems are categorized as engine problem (112). The worst engine problems are excessive fuel consumption, loss of all oil and oxygen sensor failures.

Other major and broad problems include steering problems (40), exhaust system problems (40) and cooling system problems (9). This model year is also the most problematic Toyota RAV4 model since the 90s.

3. 2008 Toyota Camry

2008-toyota-camryThis model has a total number of 139 critical complaints. The most reported problems are categorized as engine problem (71). The worst engine problem reported is largely that of excessive fuel consumption.

Other major and broad problems include interior accessories problems (24), electrical problems (8), transmission problems (7) and body and paint problems (5).

This data seems to indicate that except for the brake issues, most of the widely reported problems of the 2007 Toyota Camry model were carried over to the 2008 model year.

4. 2009 Toyota Camry

2009-toyota-camryThis model has a total number of 310 critical complaints. The most reported problems are categorized as engine problem (152). The worst engine problem reported is largely that of excessive fuel consumption followed at a distance by engine failure problems.

Other major and broad problems include interior accessories problems (44), wheels/hubs problems (23), body and paint problems (21) and brakes problems (18).

5. 2002 Toyota Camry

2002-toyota-camryThis model has a total number of 178 critical complaints. The most reported problems are categorized as engine problem (65). The worst engine problem reported is largely that of stripped head bolts followed at a distance by smoking on engine first start and car overheating.

Other major and broad problems include transmission problems (45), brakes problems (17), AC and heater problems (14) and body and paint problems (9).
