The House of Representatives has said that it would begin investigation aimed at reviewing the commercial terms and billing plan of the of electricity distribution companies, widely called the Discos.
Consequently, the House said the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) has been invited to appear before a public hearing that will also bring to the table the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Discos.
Chairman of the House ad hoc committee on the investigation, Babajimi Adegoke Benson, told journalists yesterday at the National Assembly that the public hearing is billed to commence on November 12.
Benson said part of the committee’s mandate is to “find out the methodology used in verifying investment claimed by the Discos, the billing process, evidence/proof that NERC is performing its functions appropriately and in the interest of energy customers, evidence of consumer satisfaction, challenges and problems faced by NERC in carrying out its functions, and justification for the proposed tariff increase.”
As such, he said, his committee is calling on NERC to suspend the planned increase in electricity tariff until the investigation is concluded by the lawmakers.
