FG Bans Transformer Purchase by Electricity Consumers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared as the common practice of electricity consumers in the country buying transformers for themselves as unacceptable.

To this end the Minister Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola has announced that henceforth, electricity consumers are to desist from this practice and leave the purchase to the Distribution Companies (DISCOs). According to him, transformer procurement is the primary duty of the DISCOS and not the consumers.

This disclosure was made during a meeting with officials of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (ANED). During the meeting, the Minister also expressed government readiness to offset the electricity bills owed by ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) which has been put at an estimated N97 billions.

The Minister further charged the operators to improve customer relationship as well as close the metering gap and educate consumers on the need for energy conservation.
